Beach

If Australia is known for anything besides “shrimp on the barbie” and Kylie Minogue, it’s the beaches. Australia’s coastline hosts some of the most magnificent shores in the world. If you’re up for surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling, or just plain relaxing, there is something for you.

Bondi Beach (NSW)

When one thinks of Australia’s beaches, they generally think of Bondi Beach. It’s the closest beach to a city, (Sydney), making it convenient for many. It’s not exactly the best place for rest and relaxation, but if it’s a good time you’re after look no further. The views are amazing and it’s still popular with travelers from around the globe.

Mornington Peninsula (VIC)

Perfect clear water and wild surf marks Mornington Peninsula. The craggy, rocky basalt headlands make for a beautiful backdrop against the sandy beach. Witness the surf crashing in from the Bass Strait, known as one of the most dangerous stretches of water in the world

City Beach (WA)

Amongst some of the most beautiful in the world and Perth beaches are a stunning example, with the Indian Ocean alive under the vast blue sky and lite by the fire of the Western sun City Beach is a quiet spot of beach for fishing or an afternoon of body-boarding.

CORAL BAY (WS)

The name says it all. At the beautiful and idyllic Coral Bay, the Ningaloo Reef practically starts at the water’s edge. With a lack of major tourism, the small laid-back town has a relaxed feel. Lounge-y types can hang out at Paradise Beach. For more active types, the sea is chockablock full of manta rays, turtles, whale sharks, and humpback whales. So slap on a snorkel, head over to Purdy Point, and get busy hunting for sea creatures.

VIVONNE BAY (SA)

When Sydney University evaluated 10,000 beaches across Australia, Vivonne Bay came out on top. And it’s not hard to see why. Kangaroo Island’s Vivonne Bay isn’t crowded, the surf is amazing, and the surrounded bushland scenery only adds to the natural beauty. You can go fishing, check out the wildlife at Seal Bay or Kelly Hills cave, picnic, snorkel or just hang out.

Whitehaven Beach (QLD)

Picture fine white silica sand, warm turquoise waters, and a tropical forest with various islands floating off in the distance. This is the stuff postcards are made of.

There aren’t any surfers here on Whitehaven Beach, as the surf isn’t so hot, but that doesn’t seem to matter here. Instead the sheer beauty is what keeps people coming back. Curl up with a good beach read and take a nap under the sun.

Scientists set new download speed record

Scientists have set a new data speed record using just a single laser to transmit the equivalent of 700 DVDs in one second.

They say their discovery will not only help to fulfil the world's burgeoning high-capacity bandwidth needs of cloud computing and 3D high definition TV, but provide an environmentally-friendly way of transmitting data over long distances.
